Are you sure this is fixed in karmic? With Jaunty final and LyX 1.6.2, the problem is still there. I think all you need to do is add Application; to the /usr/share/applications/lyx.desktop file on the Categories=Office;WordProcessor;Qt; line. @Benn, this is not the default GNOME behaviour, but when you install a new application on your machine and it does not appear on menu, try this as a workaround: 1. Right-click on the main menu bar 2. Choose Edit menus or type Alt+F2 on the keyboard and entry alacarte (without quotes) 3. On the Menus tree list at left, try to find which group your new application belongs to and click on it 4. Locate your application on the Itens at right. Yes, you will see it marked as being shown on the menu, but... 5. Disable it and enable it again by clicking on the application's checkbox and close the menu editor 6.
