I tried the steps in comment #2 again on a freshly installed Ubuntu 10.10 with the latest updates. I get almost the same result, except that in the second to last step (back with Totem) the pop-up dialog says An error occurred Location not found. I tried again In Ubuntu 9.10 (this time with Revolution OS disc 2). I first experienced bug #466123. After installing gstreamer0.10-plugins- ugly and reinserting the DVD it went through these steps: * Pick the default (Open Movie Player) and click OK. * The Totem movie player window appears, along with a dialog box Search for suitable plugin?. * Click on the Search button. * A window appears titled Install Multimedia Plugins. It says Please select the packages for installation to provide the following plugins: - GStreamer element dvdspu. A popup window shows a progress bar while it searches. Then it says: No packages with the requested plugins found. * Click OK. The Install Multimedia Plugins window disappears and I'm back with Totem. The Free Software Song music video starts playing immediately. I don't know what fix was implemented, but it seems it could use a little polish. I recently ran into this problem with an unencrypted DVD as well. I simply did: aptitude install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly Which solved the problem. There was no need to uninstall any other plugins, just install the ugly plugins. I took some time to analyze this some more. Here's what I did: 1. aptitude install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad 2. Insert my Big Buck Bunny DVD in the DVD tray. a) A window appears asking what action to perform. b) I select Open Movie Player and click OK. c) Totem window appears, along with a dialog box with no title, containing the message An error occured Your GStreamer installation is missing a plug-in.. d) I click OK and the DVD doesn't play. 3. aptitude --purge remove gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad 4. aptitude --purge remove freepats gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad libcdaudio1 libcelt0 libdc1394-22 libffado0 libfftw3-3 libfreebob0 libgmyth0 libiptcdata0 libjack0 liblrdf0 libmms0 libneon27-gnutls libofa0 libopenspc0 libraptor1 libsoundtouch1c2 libwildmidi0 libxml++2.6-2 raptor-utils (all the dependencies that were pulled in by step 1) 5. aptitude install package, re-insert DVD, aptitude --purge remove package; package = each of the dependencies in step 4. Every try gave the DVD Source error as before. So the only way to get rid of the DVD Source error is by installing the meta-package gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, it seems. I suspect this is because it has a debtag Gstreamer-Uri-Sources containing dvd (among others). Steps to reproduce: * Do a fresh installation of Jaunty. * Install the updates (up until today 2009-05-17). * Insert the Big Buck Bunny PAL DVD in your DVD tray. A window appears asking what action to perform * Pick the default (Open Movie Player) and click OK. * The Totem movie player window appears, along with a dialog box Search for suitable plugin?. * Click on the Search button. * A window appears titled Install Multimedia Plugins. It says Please select the packages for installation to provide the following plugins: - DVD Source. A popup window shows a progress bar while it searches. Then it says: No packages with the requested plugins found. * Click OK. The Install Multimedia Plugins window disappears and you're back with Totem. I has a new popup dialog saying: An error occurred The playback of this movie requires a DVD source plugin which is not installed.. * Click OK. Totem just sits there and nothing more happens.
