Same thing for me, but Swedish instead of Italian.

I installed Ubuntu using English as setting. Then another user of the
computer needed Swedish, so I installed that too in gnome-language, but
kept the top two settings ("for my menus..." and "For everyone at
startup...") as English (United kingdom). Still, when I log out and log
back in, all applications and all menus will be in Swedish. It seems
like installing two languages at once but specify which one to use has
some unexpected or undefined behavour.

Another thing somewhat related: I removed the swedish language from
gnome-language, but thunderbird-locale-sv-se was not removed but had to
be removed separately (it was installed together with the other language
packages when i selected Swedish, but it wasn't uninstalled together
with them)
