[Bug 354940] Re: [i915] UXA is very slow (UXA bug)

2009-08-20 Thread Chris B
With the following Intel controller on Jaunty/9.01:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile
915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller [8086:2592] (rev 03)

And updated kernel as recommended in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582
Linux presto 2.6.30-02063003-generic #02063003 SMP Sat Jul 25 10:57:13 UTC 2009
i686 GNU/Linux

Intel driver from PPA https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Architecture: i386
Version: 2:2.7.1-0ubuntu1~xup~1

xorg.conf
Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
Driver intel
Option AccelMethod exa
Option EXAOptimizeMigration true
Option MigrationHeuristicgreedy
Option Tilingtrue

I got the following results:

PPracer, fullscreen 1280*800: UXA 11-15fps, EXA 25-30fps
Fullscreen flash noticeably worse with UXA (tearing, dropped frames)

The same ratio results (UXA giving about half frame rate and worse 2D
video performance than EXA) was noted with the 2.4 Intel driver from
Intrepid, Jaunty stock 2.6.3 driver, and the X-updates 2.7.1 driver.
Performance with the downgraded 2.4 driver was noticeably worse (EXA).
Upgrading from stock 2.6.28.15 kernel to 2.6.30 gave about a 20%
improvement in framerate on ppracer.

Hope this information helps someone. However, to say that a fix is
released/bug resolved, when it's necessary to run an alpha of Karmic and
a git version of the intel driver, is stretching a point a bit. It looks
like most users will have to wait until the release of Karmic before
they can watch full-screen video on intel chips (and even then, it's
going to be marginal).

[Bug 354940] Re: [i915] UXA is very slow (UXA bug)

2009-08-20 Thread Chris B
Retested with the following:

xorg-edgers PPA intel driver
Version: 2:2.8.0+git20090814.926c7e7d-0ubuntu0sarvatt~jaunty

2.6.30-02063005-generic

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile
915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller [8086:2592] (rev 03)

Due to the 2.8.0 driver EXA is no longer available, so UXA is used whatever is
in the config file:
(WW) intel(0): Option AccelMethod is not used #new comment line in Xorg.0/log

Unfortunately, I can't confirm William Grant's test results on Karmic,
above.

With this combination (tested both with and without kernel modesetting)
the framerate in ppracer is cut to 11-14fps, and fullscreen video is
choppy. This is roughly what was achieved with 2.6.3 or 2.7.1 drivers
with UXA, and is about half the EXA framerate.

It seems this degradation does not apply to all Intel chipsets, since
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/UxaTesting has users reporting improved
performance.

I will try to report this bug upstream.

Anyone else with the same symptom really needs to file a new bug.

Same problem here on my Acer Aspire One with graphic card;
Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller
[8086:27ae] (rev 03)

When trying the UXA it's slowing down the UNR, mousepointer is laggy.

One good thing thou, is that video playback performance is improved very
much, now the picture is more smooth and theres no broken parts in the
video (when the scenes are moving on some part of the picture is behing
a few milliseconds when im running in the other mode)!

With driver 2:2.7.99.1+git20090519.09beee37-0ubuntu0sarvatt~jaunty,
ppracer reports a rough average of 26 FPS, usually ranging between 22
and 30. So that's reasonable, seems there have been a good progress. Not
sure we can close the bug, anyway it will be difficult to determine what
the normal result should be.

2:2.7.99.1+git20090520.ad212882-0ubuntu0sarvatt on linux 2.6.30-5.6
without KMS on Karmic, the degradation when switching from EXA to UXA
seems to be gone.

[Bug 354940] Re: [i915] UXA is very slow (UXA bug)

2009-05-08 Thread Milan
I've tested performances with ppracer:
EXA: 25-34 FPS - average: 31
UXA: 14-22 FPS - average: 20

So there's obviously a problem!

About benchmarking: I worked hard to get these simple figures because the '-a'
option of ppracer, that is said to enable benchmarking, raises an error. I
guess you'd get more answers if you say users to enable the Show FPS option
from the game GUI (I did not think it existed). Same for phoronix: several
tests don't work, and I couldn't find the right one. Just an idea...

Thanks, however for upstreaming purposes I'd need wgrant's reply.

Also, glxgears is not a benchmark, and presenting its numbers as
evidence of a performance bug will not be taken seriously. Comparisons
using a game such as ppracer or phoronix would be better received.

2009-05-03 Thread Milan
Still here with 2.7.0. Good to have this PPA ot check that, thanks!

I'm getting around 300 FPS instead of 750 with glxgears. I've noticed an
interesting message when starting glxgears using UXA:
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately 1/259 the monitor refresh rate.
No idea about whether it could be related. Note that with the old driver, I was
getting 250 FPS, and the refresh rate was 1/165!

I have a:
