OK I also got the error on Ubuntu 9.04 (64 bits), fresh installation. The problem disappeared the minute I installed samba $ sudo aptitude samba Still, the error message from Ubuntu is not very helpful when people have not installed the "samba" package yet and wish to share some directory. Ubuntu should at the very least say "sharing of directories requires the installation of a new software package, do you wish to proceed and install that package now?" or something like that. You get the point. OK what i said above is bullshit. Also the removal of /var/lib/samba/usershares does not trigger the error. Still i suspect that it has something to do with the previous sharing of this folder in another ubuntu-installation. I got the same error today, on a 2-day old Ubuntu 9.04 install. However, my home directory stems from a previous installation, in which I used to share this folder.
