I guess this has been fixed long ago. Not really long ago, but it is not a serious problem any more. I'm using Karmic, fully updated to 26/01/10. The 'Too many failed...' message is no more, but the bug is still there, I click 'print' on evince, the little printer icons shows up on the notification area, and disappear. Thats the error in /var/log/cups/error_log: E [26/Jan/2010:10:22:45 -0200] cupsdReadClient: 16 IPP Read Error! It seems to me that this bug is fixed in Karmic. Hi, I'm a little confused over this issue. Firstly, we never managed to find where the bug was, nor do we know whether it was fixed by someone in the first place. Shouldn't we do a little more intensive testing to see if this is still an issue? If we had actually found the faulty code and fixed it, we could be sure it has been fixed. Now that just two people have confirmed that they haven't encountered it, do we presume it has been fixed? Has anyone actively tried to print without (quote) bombing it with X events for us to be sure that this is no longer an issue? I have very little experience in software development and have zero knowledge of how Ubuntu handles such issues. So if at all I am absolutely wrong in what I am saying, don't consider what I'm am saying rude. Consider it an attempt to understand how issues are handled. Every software has its developing process, and this includes finding bugs and fixing the bugs. While a software has a bug, packagers (and/or developer) need to look for alternatives, and publish software that does what it says. Is better to remove the print button from Evince. This bug is a shame as could be any other bug in a similar situation; imagine that Ubuntu included the Empathy IM as the default messenger some years ago, when Empathy could have several bugs... It's advised not to rant, blame developers, tell why you do not use this or that, or talk about end-of-the-world situations. The bug seems to have been identified, it should be tested and fixed, I guess helping comments about making this process forward are welcome, others may be not. Yes, this should be fixed fast because it breaks important funcionality. I do not have the resources to fix it, and open source users must not _demand_ fixing from others. The terminal command: lpr mydocument.pdf prints quickly a document to the default printer and with the default options. I think this bug is important for evince usage (not grave though), but fixing it isn't easy. OTOH suggested workaround (lpr) isn't really good unless you conjure up how to set _all_ the printing options, which is (as far as I remember) not really possible. Printing without these is crappy at best, if not outright useless, considering the wide range of pdf material available, which may require different resolution, color mode, and optimalisations to set. Please remember everyone that this bug is not limited to Evince. It is a Gnome bug. Once this error starts appearing, you would not be able to print from gedit or evolution or anything else that uses gnome libs. This is an absolute trainwreck of a bug for anyone but the most experienced Linux gurus. The simple fix that I have suggested several times now is to disable that wretched bit of code that checks for too many failed attempts, but this idea has continually been ignored and this bug has been continually relegated to a lower level of importance. And yes, it will probably continue in Karmic. But we're just a bunch of stupid users of free software, plagued by a bug that only affects people who use printers, which is now a minority. This bug is a shame for GNU systems. Actually Ubuntu is a great representative of GNU systems. A lot of software is not selected to be installed as default in Ubuntu because of their bugs, then which could be the problem to select another PDF viewer as default until the bug is fixed? Can anyone reproduce this in Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic)? Support for CUPS authorization was only recently added to GTK+ in version 2.17.0 (first distributed in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic). I am no developer, but it appears to be as simple as finding the function that is the equivalent of bool CheckForTooManyFailedAttempts() and hack it to always return false. Whatever code is checking for some sort of failed attempts is bogus and does no good. Even if there was some sort of legitimate failed attempt the user doesn't need a stupid dialog box to tell him that his document failed to print. Just blindly try to print no matter what. Nobody is stopping you from updating to the latest version of a program before the next distribution is released. You can always build from the source on your own. You can also run the latest distribution before it is released. This is why we have releases, where everything is hopefully in a somewhat stable state. Try running Gentoo if you want to be able to upgrade to the latest packages with little regard to how it affects the rest of the system. It's a lot of work to get everything working together. This is the work that the Ubuntu developers are doing. Of course I can build the latest versions from source, even though sometimes that means backtracking and building all the latest libraries from source first. But as an average user trying to do average things on a home computer, should I have to build things from source? Of course not. Should an average user really even know about source, past a general idea of what it's all about? Nope. On Windows or on a Mac, if there's a new version of a program, they just release a new binary and there you go. It works on your current system. Heck, it's even usually backwards and forwards compatible. Now there's lots of other areas that Windows and Mac get wrong, but software handling isn't one of them. Windows does it better, and Mac does it much, much better. Why does all this bug me? Aside from the inconvenience of it all, I'm afraid if Linux in general continues along these paths it'll marginalize itself and never achieve the desktop saturation that I wish it would. This bug is a perfect example of that. In today's day and age, printing and PDFs are a major part of common computer use, and yet here it's marked as a low priority item. Something like this that directly impacts the user should be high priority. They shouldn't have to wiggle their mouse to make it work. You or I or the other people here might put up with it, but an average user, a new user, might say, This sucks, I can't even print my documents. I can confirm peter gervai's fix. What a crazy bug! Never seen anything like it. Test Process: 1. Find a big, complex PDF file. I went to http://news.google.com and printed off the whole thing to a 5 page PDF file, about 1.5 MB in size. 2. Open the PDF with Evince, click print, and then let your mouse rest in the taskbar or window manager bar. 3. Enjoy the Too many failed attempts message after a few seconds. 4. Wash, rinse, repeat. It will fail. 5. Now try again, click print on the same document in Evince, but this time start peddling. In an effort to eliminate the worldwide obesity problem, it is necessary to work hard for your PDF document! I have to admit, I chuckled at the above mouse solution when I first read it but moving the mouse rapidly over evince while printing has consistently (100% of the time) worked for me as well. I used a PDF of a scanned document, which prints perfectly using lp, kpdf, okular, etc. but makes evince choke via the too many failed attempts message. I'm seeing this too on an up-to-date 32-bit Jaunty install. Printing works sometimes. Other times, even printing the same PDF from evince it fails and I see errors like this in /var/log/cups/error_log: E [28/Jul/2009:08:45:20 +1000] cupsdReadClient: 10 IPP Read Error! When printing I run wireshark and I see *no* network traffic (except some unrelated broadcasts - definitely unrelated, they're for my Squeezebox). I'm having a similar issue with Evince. It's quite weird though, I seem to always get this error if the Evince window is out of focus, but if I keep the window in focus it works. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but that's been my experience so far. Confirmed - Evince is rendered useless for all printing purposes on my system.
