The just-released ALSA 1.0.23 may help. No, the above tip didn't make any difference for me. As I said, it's only the GNOME volume control and GNOME Gstreamer applications that I have had trouble with so far. Anything else that uses Gstreamer or Pulseaudio works perfectly. I can even open 'pavucontrol' to control the volume of my programs and output volume. Interestingly, thought, when I open the PulseAudio Manager 'paman' and play the test sounds, only the WAV sound 'dialog-question.wav' plays, not any of the OGG ones, although this is probably just due to the fact that Pulseaudio uses Gstreamer to play Ogg files and Gstreamer on GNOME is not functional at the moment. I'm sorry for posting my configuration without introducing myself first. Anyway, I have this bug as well on a Dell Latitude D820. On a clean install, the sound works perfectly, but after the first round of updates after a clean install (without installing anything else), the Volume Control applet, as well as anything both GNOME and gstreamer related, is broken, with identical error messages to those posted above. However, sound still functions normally in all other instances---for example, Songbird, which uses gstreamer but not GNOME, works, as does VLC on both Default and ALSA output. In addition, running 'pasuspender -- speaker- test -c2 -Dplughw:0' produces sound. Public bug reported: I'm running Jaunty with the latest updates as of today and with linux- restricted-modules on a Toshiba Tecra A10 and gstreamer doesn't seem to produce any sound. I tried running the gstreamer audio test with the following command but I can't hear any sound: gst-launch-0.10 'audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink' Of course, I made sure that the sound was turned all the way up to 11!
