Steve, I did not have laptop-mode enabled, however this has recently stopped occurring for me since I upgraded to Karmic. Luke, do you also have laptop-mode enabled as Martin does? Can you post the output of 'sudo hdparm -I /dev/sda'? I'm having same behaviour as Martin on karmic with my thinkpad sl300. Very annoying, especially when watching movies. I have a similar problem with my m1330, however it only seems to happen after resuming from suspend. Additionally, it seems to turn off my free- fall sensor. I'm not sure if it matters if I have the AC cord connected or not. I see this too, but only when I plug in power when the laptop is running. If I boot up with AC connected, the disk does not spin down. Probably the system just misses the transition from battery to AC here. I assume it has something to do with laptop-mode missing the event. After I plug in power, laptop mode is on state 2 (whatever that means).
