Hi Fabio, Sorry for my silence. I have changed my computer long time ago, as well as the version of Ubuntu and the type of connection (ADSL and no more 3G). I am thus unable to repeat the bug and to provide any additional information... I guess we should close the case... Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. But! aha! I found this page http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=43614 followed the instructions and so far no freezing, I thought starting the hald (/etc/init.d/hal start) would initialize the config, but it seems it took a reboot. so the workround for this bug is create /usr/share/hal/fdi/preprobe/20thirdparty/10-huawei-e220.fdi and fill it with true So far I have tested this fix for 44 minutes, so it's not yet definitive, but I have done many things that triggered the bug before, and so far so good. I'll keep testing and get back to you in a day/week, depending on personal business. Hmm, well that failed. although there is a program hal-disable-polling which should stop the hal from polling the modem and causing the freeze, when I try. sudo hal-disable-polling --udi /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_12d1_1003_noserial_if2 which is the udi for the Huawei modem, as given by hal-device (see below) I get an "Device with udi /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_12d1_1003_noserial_if2 is not a storage device." error. [Bug 367397] Re: jaunty 9.04 gnome desktop freezes on mobile internet disconnect
I've pretty much narrowed this down to an issue with hald-addon-stor as that seems to be the only common running process just after the freezes. I assume that this is some kind of automounter and that it might be trying to automount the 'cd' that is in the Huawei modem, which could cause issues. I'm trying to work out how to turn it off, when I have I'll report back on if that fixes things. [Bug 367397] Re: jaunty 9.04 gnome desktop freezes on mobile internet disconnect
I've experienced a similar freeze using a huawei 169 modem connected to Virgin Broadband in Australia. The freeze occurs on a Dell 6400 and an Asus AA1, both with Jaunty and all software updates installed. I've also tried NM 0.7.1 from PPA with no improvement -- still freezes on most disconnects, whether or nor there is network activity. However, if I uncheck enable networking in Network Manager, the modem will disconnect without freezing the computer. The problem seems like a bug in NM to me. I'm wondering if others, apart from Wolf, have similar experiences. Wolf, could you try my suggestion.
