I have also tried solution 1 and the same problem occured again. Then I looked for the permission of the other files with extension .sty in the latex folder. I have changed the permission of xargs.sty with sudo chmod 644 to read/write access for the owner and just read access for the group and others. I also have this problem, and would like it solved for all users. I
tried eldad 's solution: 1) download xargs.dtx from ctan, 2) in that
dir, run latex xargs.dtx (produces a bunch of xargs.* files), 3) sudo
make the xargs dir, 4) sudo cp xargs.sty to that dir, 5) sudo texhash,
6) open lyx, in tools menu, choose reconfigure... it tells me to
restart lyx
... but I still have the Latex error: File 'xargs.sty' not found, and in the
description area of the error list, it says \usepackage{xargs}[2008/03/08]

*** (cannot \read from terminal in nonstop modes)
any help on solving this globally (for all users)? thanks!

It seems like a problem corrected in texlive 2008 (eg see http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-us...@lists.lyx.org/msg72253.html ) temporary solution: 1) download xargs.dtx from http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/xargs/ 2) open a terminal where the downloaded pack is saved and run latex xargs.dtx 3) sudo mkdir /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/xargs 4) sudo cp xargs.sty /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/xargs/ 5) sudo texhash 6) open lyx, reconf and restart lyx I agree this should have been solved in a more elegant manner. I don't know how to do that...
