i had a problem, it was a wrong setup in my settings, here's how i corrected it. Open up the Terminal(top left screen, Applications/Accessories/Terminal. Type "alsamixer" without the quotations and press enter. Press F4 on your keyboard, this will bring you to Capture. Press the right button till you get to "Input Source" and press up or down till you reach the microphone you want. I wanted the one built into my laptop so i used "Internal Mic". There has been no activity on this bug for a while. Is this issue still reproduceable with either Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 with latest updates installed, or Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 alpha 3? If using kubuntu, substitute kubuntu for the above versions. Now the mic works : in KDE settings I have for outputs / communication "PulseAudio" in first position and for audio capture / communication HDA Intel (ALC885 Analog) in first position (AudioPulse not selectable). For Skype I have the following settings : PulseAudio selected for all features. For Audacity I have the following settings : Alsa pulse for input and output. A fix with sound settings with gnome-volume-control not really satisfactory but that works has been proposed but this settings through gnome-volume-control (either in Gnome or KDE) is not kept when gnome- volume-control is closed or between sessions. Since you mentioned it was affecting other applications as well, I've added the pulseaudio package in Ubuntu.
