I do not have anything besides Karmic installed. However, I just tried xubuntu 8.04 from a live cd and left click worked fine. Does it work in Windows, or even another Linux flavour? At the end of the day, electronics break. Thanks. Disabling the touchpad in the BIOS has solved my problem. In Karmic, it is no longer possible to disable the touchpad in system>prefrences>mouse>touchpad. It seems a bit weird that the touchpad should be worn out already. The computer is only 1 1/2 years old. Is mouse failure to be expected? I thought thinkpads were of high quality. I think that there are at least two ways to do it. I went into "mouse" in "system"=>"preferences", and on the "touchpad" tab there is a checkbox labelled "enable touchpad", which I unchecked. I know it's difficult to use the menus without left-click, but you can do it with a combination of tab, alt and space. I think you can also go into the bios on startup. I don't know if you can still do it on the T61, but if you press F1 quickly after startup on the T30, you can disable the touchpad there. Good luck! I'm experiencing a similar problem on my laptop. Its a lenovo thinkpad t61. Left click randomly (random boot-ups) stops working. This affects both on touch-pad and "mouse" button. However, a few times I have booted from a live xbuntu cd (9.04), and those times it has worked fine (although, since the problem is stochastic, this could be by chance). The problems started some weeks ago under jaunty. But yesterday, I did a clean install with karmic and the problem still remains. Since the problem has gradually became more frequent it appears that it may be the touch-pad wearing out, but the computer is only 1 1/2 years old, and restarting Xorg generally fixes the problem (if not, another killall Xorg will do it). And once a session is running ok, it will stay ok until Xorg is started the next time. How to proceed? Which information should I gather?
