As a workaround you can just install python-eggtrayicon package. Actually in Gajim README file (http://hg.gajim.org/gajim/raw- file/1001e93ec906/README.html) in "Optional Runtime Requirements" one can read: "GnomePythonExtras 2.10 or above (aka gnome-python-desktop) so you can avoid compiling trayicon and gtkspell". Actually this is a result of Bug #348793 which moved python- gnome2-extras to suggests. I ran into this problem on a fresh install of Jaunty. I'm going to reopen this because it looks like a regression of Bug #240215 Gajim is capable of providing it's own tray icon or it can use the one provided by python-gnome2-extras. Gajim is currently compiled with --disable-trayicon.
