Do you still have this problem with the new version of OOo in the ppa at https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive ? To clarify I can toggle any of the options except Notes by pressing either the underlined letter of the label on the check-box, or holding down Ctl and pressing the letter.
