I reproduced the issue, but did not notice any change in the log as I started up OO.o and reproduced the issue. Attached is the requested log file. I notice that the flicker appears only on the OO.o toolbar area that overlaps with one of the possible-target windows when that target is preview/highlighted while alt-tabbing. I think this might be an xorg issue but I am not completely certain. Sorry it took me a while. I just figured out how to do the partial upgrade and installed the version you mentioned from the PPA. OpenOffice.org 3.1.0 OOO310m11 (Build:9399) I had the same flickering result with this new version. Btw, in this try I am using Xfce4 via xubuntu-desktop package.
