The option in places / connect to server 
works also on the affected computer. So by this way I can mount the shares,

This bug affects me too.

Situation:
Fresh installed 10.04 
Trying to connect to a PDC Samba 2.x gives me exactly the shown bug.
I can browse the shares but when trying to connect there is no password dialog, 
just the shown error message.

But connection to another Samba Server 3.x works well - the password
dialog appears and mounting is okay.

Other machines (Ubuntu 8.10,9.04,9.10) in this network are not affected
by this bug.
