I have no way of reproducing the bug atm, so I'd just mark the bug as invalid. If I ever encounter this problem again I'll re-report it. Tried it with a usb disk. There it worked perfectly. I've attached the html files generated by gparted. Still leaves me wondering why gparted failed on my spinpoint F1's. The error message says: /dev/sda1 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here! I don't think this is related to bug #317709, it actually sounds like a bug related to 'hal-lock' that is (supposed to be) fixed in jaunty's GParted version. So this is a bit weird.
