[Bug 392518] Re: Two Desktop GNOME panels unnecessary

2009-09-10 Thread Jérôme
The new 12 notebooks have powerfull processors and thus allows to use
the standard Ubuntu flavor instead of the netbook edition.

However the default 2nd panel is wasting place in height. Moreover, the
new displays are mostly with a 16/10 or 16/9 aspect ratio.

It is boring each new notebook user who has to remove the 2nd panel and
add the new applets in the 1st one by hand.

The new powerfull notebooks processors and 16/10 displays should make
the question raise again.

2009-09-10 Thread mac_v
Jérôme , Kindly read *all* the comments above.

This move has to be first discussed in the mailing list and we have a separate
UNR edition for this .
We can not be modifying desktop edition simply because netbooks have become
powerful.
For the use case you've mentioned UNR needs to be updated , not Desktop
edition. And paperctus are only regarding desktop editioon.

2009-09-10 Thread Jérôme
Mac_v, I'm not speaking about netbooks but about laptops.

A 12 mobile computer has a DVD writer and thus is a laptop but not a
netbook.

Thus I need to install Ubuntu desktop edition.

This *needs* to be discussed on the mailing list...
 subscribe to https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-desktop
and propose your solution to the list , so that this can be discussed.
A bug report is not the place for these discussions.

[Bug 392518] Re: Two Desktop GNOME panels unnecessary

2009-07-03 Thread klicki
The first proposal in this bug is also my #1 Paper Cut! But I would
phrase it differently:

Ubuntu's default desktop setup looks way too geeky,
it should look more like good 'ol familiar Windows. :-)

The average Ubuntu novice user has previous experience with MS Windows.
The standard layout of Windows desktop hasn't changed much since the
introduction of Windows 95 almost 15 years ago! That is:

* only one panel at the bottom
* Start/Windows button on the far left (no need for the application menu)
* Status and notification items on the far right
* Launchers and open apps in between
* NO Workspaces (they only confuse our average Joe)

The first thing I always do when I set up Ubuntu on a client's computer
is to recreate the Windows standard layout. It eases the transition by
removing one more hurdle.

By the way, also Mac users are confused by the two-panel-layout, because
the top-panel behaves completely different than the menu bar in Mac OS.
I'd say that the confusing is eaven bigger for Mac-heads.

So nobody(!) benefits from the current default settings. It's just a
trivially fixable usability bug that the average user would encounter
on his/her first day of using a brand new installation of Ubuntu Desktop
Edition. ;-)

Simply change the default layout in Ubuntu, so that it resembles
(visually and behavior-wise) Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000,
Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Kubuntu, … It's so easy to do and
would make switching to Ubuntu so much user-friendler.

P.S.: The few(!) geeks who really love the two-panel layout can easily
add panels to their liking. But the default setting is supposed to
*attract* new users from the Windows-world, not scare 'em off.

[Bug 392518] Re: Two Desktop GNOME panels unnecessary

2009-07-03 Thread Andy.hall06
Ok I know this is not befitting of a serious and useful place like
Launchpad, but that seriously calls for a.ROFL :D

Klicki, you do not know what you have just done, you have opened a pandora's
box. I would suggest, run and do not look back :D.
Are you new to Linux or Linux forums?

People HATE it when anyone suggests be like windows just for the sake of
it or to attract windows users. Linux is Linux, for any change, there
should be a good reason irrespective of windows. That windows does it a
certain way is all the more reason for most Linux users to NOT want it
like that. Windows is a dirty word hehe. So I could not stop laughing
when I read this:

Simply change the default layout in Ubuntu, so that it resembles
(visually and behavior-wise) Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000,
Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Kubuntu, … It's so easy to do and

Not my views, but just the way things are in Linux forums, you might not
get bashed and flamed here because this is launchpad and usually full of
mature devs and similar people but on user forums, what you suggested
(actually the way you suggested it) would go down very badly with the
enthusiasts.

I actually agree with you on most points but not simply because Windows
does it, but because Windows, KDE and Mac do it a certain way simply
because it is a better way. Many people consider KDE a sell out because
of its Windows like taskbar.
