Hmm, seems like I was mistaken at a point or two, the correct bug report for the _selection copy_ of text would be https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/poppler/+bug/33288 However the invisible-text-on-selection is likely a separate bug, which would be appropriate to keep here. My patch does not solve the invisible-text-on-selection issue, hence removing it here (it does however solve the column issue, and are still available for that purpose from my ppa and from above mentioned bug). This bugger bug is prevailing ever since I start using linux 2 years ago.
