Invalid?  I call that Wontfix :-)

By system connections, I presume you mean connections defined in
/etc/something?  I tried to do that, but couldn't really get it to work
properly.

But just in case other people stumble by, looking to solve similar
problems, I've now replaced NetworkManager with wicd, which works really
nice for me.  It's not quite as featureful as NM (e.g. NM is really nice
for configuring GSM networking), but it gets the basics (wifi and wired)
right and is lightweight.

you can setup NM with system connections. this will eliminate the need
for the applet. Also the daemon itself doesnt use gnome much. nor does
it use gconf directly.
