I posted the patch upstream. Unfortunately I cannot apply it to Ubuntu
right now, since the package fails to build:

gpk-check-update.c: In function ‘gpk_check_update_process_updates’:
gpk-check-update.c:932: error: implicit declaration of function 
‘ca_gtk_context_get’
gpk-check-update.c:938: error: passing argument 1 of ‘ca_context_play’ makes 
pointer from integer without a cast

This is unrelated to dropping devicekit.

I checked the code, and it seems that it is just a superfluous
dependency in configure.ac and debian/control:
