The memory looks fine, of course while you are actually saving it
shooting up to 100% cpu usage is to be expected, but it shouldn't stay
at that afterwards.

Re: [Bug 408171] Re: OOCalc greys over and does not respond when saving a large 2MB file in MS xls format.

2010-05-18 Thread David Boyd
Hi Chris,
Here's a copy of what I got when I ran "free -m" while the xls document
was open in OO calc:

total used free sharedbuffers cached
Mem: 2009 1993 16 0 72 1037
-/+ buffers/cache:883 1126
Swap: 5820 0 5820

Do you think there is a problem? Altering some of the data in the file
and then saving in xls format the System Monitor showed I used 59.7%
(1.2GB) of Memory and 0.1% of swap. However the CPU (set "on demand")
shot up to 100%. Is there some way to reconfigure my system?

[Bug 408171] Re: OOCalc greys over and does not respond when saving a large 2MB file in MS xls format.

2010-05-18 Thread Chris Cheney
You could try running 'free -m' in a terminal while you have the
document opened and see how much free memory it thinks you have. The
below is an example of my machine, the third line shows the amount of
used and free for regular usage, so on my laptop at the moment I have
1016MB used and 2840MB free. I noticed after I had saved the document on
my laptop OOo was using around 1.25GB of memory, I'm not sure if it used
more during the save process, but if you are low on memory that might be
why it was crashing. Also the fourth line shows how much swap space you
have and how much is used, my machine has 4094MB of swap with only 42MB
used, if yours shows a large amount used compared to what you have
available that might mean you are running the system out of memory also.
What happens when you run out of memory is some process is killed, in
most cases the process that caused the system to run out of memory, but
not always.

 total used free sharedbuffers cached
Mem: 3856 2531 1324 0 29 1485
-/+ buffers/cache: 1016 2840
Swap: 4094 42 4052

Thanks for replying, Chris.
I have 2.0 GB of Memory on machine with an AMD 64x4 Dual Core Processor
5200. Do you think I should increase the Memory?

Loading the file is no problem now with OO 3.2 and Ubuntu 10.04. However
it still crashes when I try to save any amendments.

2010-05-18 Thread Chris Cheney
How much ram do you have in your system?

The example opens very slowly on one of my VMs that only has 512MB ram.
After loading the file I looked and OOo was taking 1.1GB of ram.
Attempting to save in the VM causes it to crash. I probably managed to
run my VM out of even swap space causing it to crash. On my laptop, a
Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz with 4GB ram, it takes 30s to load, it does grey out
but that is due to Compiz window manager thinking it is not responding,
and then takes about 7s to save. It does not crash on my laptop which is
not nearly as memory constrained.

I've now loaded Ubuntu 9.10. The problem remains the same. Calc is slow
in opening my ods file. Still greys over and crashes when trying to save
in xls format. Will the new version of Open Office (3.2) fix this

[Bug 408171] Re: OOCalc greys over and does not respond when saving a large 2MB file in MS xls format.

2009-09-20 Thread David Boyd
I still have the same problem saving in MS xls format. Tried reinstalling Open
Office. No difference.
The problem appears to be between Open Office 3.11 and Ubuntu 9.04.
I can save in xls format using Open Office on a MS XP operating system. I
copied my files to a flash drive, went to another computer that had XP and Open
Office loaded, and opened and saved the files in both xls and ods formats
without any trouble using Open Office 3.1.
Does anyone has any answers for me? Part of the problem comes from using
formulas to link to other files and insert figures.
I may have to forget about Ubuntu altogether, reformat my hard drive with my XP
disk, and then download OO 3.1 for Windows.

Hi Chris,
Any luck getting my big file to load and save quicker? I've since split the
file in two with five and eight sheets in the two files and saved in ods
format. The first file still takes some time to load and save and uses 100% of
my 2.60GHz CPU.
- cheers, David

Hi Chris,

Here's the large file I have difficulty saving in MS xls format. Its
also slow opening and saving in OO ods format. It has 13 sheets,
multiple calculations and also transfers figures from last years account
file for the monthly summary. You may be able to suggest better formulas
to make it work quicker.

I am the treasurer for our local rural Anglican Parish which has 7
centres. Please treat this file as confidential.

Many thanks,
- David.
