This was discussed in Debian Java mailing list and a decision has been made to move -gcj packages from 'Recommends' to 'Suggests'. This has been implemented for some packages already. I will discuss this change in Debian Java mailing list. Since Debian has also switched to openjdk as default-jdk if this change gets implemented there we don't have to maintain Ubuntu specific change. Can someone bump up the priority on this?
