Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately xmms was removed since Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron because it was unmaintained. So we will not fix your bug. You can use audacious instead. Yes, changing to ALSA helped me too. Although it wasn't a really bad bug, it was annoying all the same. Especially if you wanted to use keyboard controls to adjust the volume, and what better way than through the player itself. Same problem here. Changing output to ALSA didn't work, xmms just says Couldn't open audio. However, when ALSA is selected in xmms, Rhythmbox starts working again. Any more suggestions ? I noticed the same issue with a vanilla install of xmms in Gutsy. Following PaulSchulz's recommendation solved the issue. Confirmed Xmms volume and balance regulation doesn't work. When i start Mplayer while playing Xmms I receive the following error: Could not open/initialize audio device. I am seeing a similar problem with audio volume in edgy. The audio from xmms is at full volume, and mixer volume controls have no effect. Other applications (mplayer) cannot be started while xmms is running.
