at the very least it could notify the user if a fallback to 2048x2048 was 
selected and mention that xorg.conf should be changed  manually if the user 
thinks it is safe.
better use a black or whitelist to decide when to default to 2048
And ideally it would apply the mode change in the current X session and ask the 
user in a timed dialog whether to make the change persistent or not :)
