[Bug 416979] Re: grub boot does not update to recognize nvidia proprietary driver

2009-08-31 Thread Christopher
I re-installed Karmic Alpha 4 with updates after formatting to FAT32,
then to ext4 and Grub 2. I haven't had any reoccurrence of the bug. All
programs previously installed were restored from my-packages.

There is still no splash on boot or shutdown - just a black screen until
login. As the bug affects other users; 416979 and possibly 414034, I am
not marking this bug as invalid yet.

2009-08-29 Thread Christopher
Disabling the nvidia driver leaves me with a 640x480 resolution. There
needs to be a fix in the nvidia driver. Perhaps the bug is restricted to
certain makes and models of monitors. I have had on and off issues since
Hardy with my Acer AL1715.

2009-08-24 Thread Christopher
These are the last lines before the boot stops. I didn't see any other
boot failures other than virtual box, which has always shown as 'fail'

'user'-desktop login: * Stopping NTP server ntpd
 *
Starting NTP server ntpd

Other than the shell root, I have no access to Karmic at all.

2009-08-24 Thread Susan Cragin
To enable a temporary work-around, disable the nvidia driver as follows:

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

comment out the line that reads something like

driver = nvidia
