Kernel 2..31-9 Kernel boots fine now. So not sure what that was but it's fixed! No, it's an (old) Compaq Presario Laptop, not a netbook. /var/log/gdm does exist as a directory with a bunch of files into it, although I don't have access to that dir (sudo does). By any chance are you running on a netbook with /var/log using tmpfs?
