Have the same problem, with Pidgin 1:2.10.3-0ubuntu1.3 on Ubuntu 12.04. I think a workaround is to wait for the list to be completely downloaded and then sort. Actually, one comment - there is a 'stop' button to interrupt it getting the chat list, but again that took quite a while to appear/do anything.
