There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. I forgot about this bug. Now I have still Kubuntu 11.04 (I will probably update to 12.04) and everything works fine. This is maybe also because I have a new (?) (2y) Asus K51 AC Laptop with probably a better hardware.
