It's a pretty superficial solution because, unlike in 3.5, the user doesn't have the full width of the panel (minus the clock and tray in the corner) to arrange the remaining icons as seen fit. Instead, he has to manually fiddle with spacers whenever he wants to leave some room between widgets.
