[Bug 458929] Re: Indicator applet has no menu icons

2010-08-07 Thread Mike Bell
How could anyone defend such an illogical and poor choice? Especially
from people who code (who are supposed to be logical). Throughout my
life, I've developed a wide variety of applications on many different
platforms. So I'm speaking from a lot of experience (though have been
out of the coding game for a few years now). I've noticed that when
people comment on Ubuntu and point out bugs and/or inconsistencies,
frequently (but not always), the reaction is defensive and sometimes
hostile rather than what it should be. Too much ego and not enough
common sense and humility. That's the kind of thing I'd expect from
Microsoft - not "the community" of open software developers/designers in
the linux world.

Yes, they're "just icons", and it's not critical. But either icons are
useful or they are not. If we agree that they are useful, then they
surely belong on such a frequently used menu. To argue otherwise is
illogical. Icons are good on EVERY single other menu EXCEPT this one?
heheh. C'mon, that makes no sense. Also, people coming from the Windows
world are used to seeing icons for shutdown, restart, etc.

"We're choosing to use our icons in a much more reserved way". lol. Face
it - it was a bad decision and should be changed asap. Linux is about
choice. Give users the CHOICE to display them or not.

[Bug 458929] Re: Indicator applet has no menu icons

2010-04-11 Thread Krzysztof Kosinski
This severely slows down the use of this menu.

Since the default is now to not show any icons, adding some to the
indicator applet would not change the existing UI for users with default
settings, but would improve the situation for people who *want* icons in
menus.

[Bug 458929] Re: Indicator applet has no menu icons

2010-03-15 Thread jaydelling...@yahoo.com
I can't believe that this is such a big deal to get a few icons for
consistency, this menu is ugly and has been ugly for the last year since
it started invading my UI. The menu doesn't match up with the rest of
the UI, and I would rather look at the old "Applications, Places, and
System" menu with the shutdown options in it. Atleast with the old gnome
shutdown metaphor, all my crucial UI items would be on the left side of
the screen with the new "max, min, and close" window icons.

I second the request for icons (preferably coloured ones, not
monochrome) to make it easier to use for those whose sight is not the
best. I think this is an accessibility bug.

[Bug 458929] Re: Indicator applet has no menu icons

2009-10-27 Thread Andrea Ratto
The old way was jaunty without the applet or any previous release since ubuntu
existed (System menu has icons up to jaunty).
Jaunty is exactly affected by this in its default settings, and it looks awful.

All gnome programs have icons in menus. Through gconf one can choose to
see them or not (this is already implemented and used). So if this was
fixed you still won't see icons, but I and many of my friends would.
Everybody wins.

This applet is the only place were the icons are missing at all. The
needed icons are there, ready and installed, so it's a matter of ~10
lines of code to set them when building the menuitems.

You've got to respect users' choices and don't break their habits.
Please reconsider fixing this bug and adhering to the common behaviour
of other gnome programs. If you look around there are no programs with
ten or so items in a menu and not even a single icon.

I might even send a patch if you are a little more responsive.

[Bug 458929] Re: Indicator applet has no menu icons

2009-10-26 Thread Ted Gould
There were no icons in Jaunty either. So the old way was to not have
icons. We're choosing to use our icons in a much more reserved way, and
have chosen not to have them on those items. Thank you for your
comment!
