[Bug 465464] Re: Gnome panels continuously crash, then reload

2010-03-15 Thread a-blender-guy
OMG. Same Bug here on PackardBell EasyNote MX66-203 Notebook with NVIDIA
7300GO, nvidia driver and Dual Monitor with seperate XServers
(Laptop-LCD:1280x800 CRT:1024x768).
It happened after deleting the notification area on a panel on the
LaptopScreen. Same like Dmitry Ostasevich sayed. Panel restarts and crashes. On
and on. Seems like the CPU-time is eaten cause of that, I hear the fan.
Please help.

[Bug 465464] Re: Gnome panels continuously crash, then reload

2010-03-15 Thread a-blender-guy
Ok. I set the panel back! --WITHOUT ADMIN PRIVILEGE--
I copied following folder contents from my other pc (where panel is still okay)
to the notebook (before that I deleted folder-contents on the notebook):

~/.gconf/apps/gnome-settings/gnome-panel
~/.gconf/apps/panel

Although I had differend screen resolution on my other pc it worked fine.
When copying is done, I just had to power off reboot the laptop -- 4 seconds
Powerbutton :-(

Why did I not use sudo + ... in console?
Two things:
1. xterm randomly looses focus (cause of panel-restarting), so I could not
enter admin-password correctly (everything on STRG+ALT+7)
2. wasn't able to use the real console on STRG+ALT+1 (or 2,3,4,5,6), because
I never see what I'm typing there. (Ony black screen, maybe wrong video-mode.)

I hope Ubuntu 10.04 will be better. (Now I'm using 9.10 32bit)

The same with me. Nvidia and dual monitor config. After deleting
notification area applet panels restarts every second or two.

Identical problem here. Have 9.10 32-bit. Using AMD with dual monitors
and nvidia drivers. Tried to delete a duplicate icon from the panel and
got the crash loop. It's definitely related to dual monitor usage with
the panel.

Follow the procedure for restoring the default panel.
http://www.saifur-rahman.com/2008/12/restoring-default-ubuntu-panel/

The following ran as sudo worked:

gconftool-2 --shutdown
rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel
pkill gnome-panel

[Bug 465464] Re: Gnome panels continuously crash, then reload

2009-12-14 Thread zip_000
Same problem here - very frustrating problem indeed. Thankfully I found
this report. Deleting everything in ~/.gconf/apps/panel fixed my
problem.

This happened when I was trying to reorder the items in the top panel. I
think I accidentally selected Delete this panel when I meant to just
move an item. I was over the notification area, so it's possible that I
removed that though. Either way I ended up with unusable horrible
crashing panels which made everything on the screen bounce.

I am using two monitors, latest Nvidia driver, and I do have some
accessibility stuff turned on.

It isn't random... I have the same issue here... it did NOT happen until
I upgraded to the 16 Kernel through Update Manager, and YES I too
clicked off the icon on the Panel as described in the first post.
Earlier Kernel stops it...

[Bug 465464] Re: Gnome panels continuously crash, then reload

2009-11-14 Thread Tony Maro
I'll confirm it's caused by removing the notification area, and point to
a bug in the Debian list that references details:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=547093

I was able to get back in by logging into an xterm session instead of
gnome and do the following:

cd .gconf/apps/
rm -R -f panel
exit

Then, log back into a gnome session and the default panel has returned,
minus the crash loop.

Hardware details:
Dual Nvidia 9800GT PCI-X cards
Two monitors on each card, twinview for each desktop (total 4 monitors, 2
desktops)
Proprietary nvidia drivers installed with the hardware drivers tool.

[Bug 465464] Re: Gnome panels continuously crash, then reload

2009-10-31 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.
I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

It only happened once. After I killed gconf2-d, it stopped. Permanently. If
you want, I can try to recreate the problem by repeating what I did the
first time.

Status in “gnome-panel” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Whew, this one is one annoying bug! After finally getting my second monitor
working as a seperate Xscreen with nvidia's proprietary tool, I noticed a
weird-looking icon where the Network Manager icon usually is. I should note
that both screens have identical panels. except for the Notification Area.
This is the default appearance after using the nvidia tool.

Anyway, I try to remove this icon. Doesn't work the first time, but the
second time, it does. But now all four panels crash and reload, crash and
reload, ad infinitum, and the alt+F2 dialog crashes shortly after being
opened. I even have to restart the computer after a few minutes, because I
get a kernel panic! This does not reccur after the reboot though, strangely,
 though the panels keep flashing.

I finally manage to stop the madness by adding a launcher for the
gnome-terminal to my desktop, double-clicking it to get to a terminal, then
 killing gconfd-2.
