I'm also experiencing this. My specs are: ubuntu 9.10 x86_64 gigabyte EP45 UD3P w/ Core 2 Duo E8400 4 gb ram radeon 4870 w/ the ATi restricted drivers compiz enabled for my power settings I had it set to put the display to sleep after 30 minutes. My current workaround is just to set it to not sleep the display, which isn't that desirable. For what it is worth I have the same Problem 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10 fresh install (No non open source drivers ) Compiz enabled.. I also have this problem -- exact symptoms and observations as above. It is a new computer, with a fresh new 9.10 installation (dual boots with Win 7). To assist, here's the system specs: - GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Phenom II X3 705e 2.5GHz Socket AM3 65W Triple-Core - ZOTAC ZT-95TEK2P-FSL GeForce 9500 GT 1GB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 - 4 GB DDR3 RAM - Intel X25-M Mainstream 2.5 80GB SATA II MLC SSD (gen2) - 2 DVD drives I have the screen saver set to blank the screen after 15 minutes and have the power settings set to turn off the screen after 30 minutes. Obviously, there is no hard drive spin-down in mine case as I have an SSD, so that might be something that can be ruled out at least. I have no idea what would be causing this. I also have to power down to recover, which I hate having to do. If there is some other known recovery method, that would be nice to know. I want to follow up again adding that I am using 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10 Also, based on this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1307653.html I am suspecting the problem is with 185 driver. Maybe. If so, I guess it's an nVidia issue, but it may need to be confirmed. Also, if anyone does get this black screen of death try doing a ctrl- alt-f1.
