[Bug 473722] Re: Karmic Frequently Hangs with 100% CPU

2009-11-16 Thread Jonathan Gossage
I think it is unlikely to be the hardware at this stage. Here is a link:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/HighCPU to a page that
describes troubleshooting procedures for high X loads. Could you please
try the first procedure, i.e. killing processes one by one to see if one
of them is causing X to show high CPU utilization?

[Bug 473722] Re: Karmic Frequently Hangs with 100% CPU

2009-11-16 Thread Magnus
Well, that was quick. It just froze again. And this time with 100% cpu
taken by X.

I was able to log in from another computer using ssh. That's how I got the top
log.
On the frozen computer, all I could do was to move the mouse pointer. No
response from keyboard whatsoever.
However, over ssh everything seemed to go quite smoothly...

Strange!

I'm beginning to think that my graphics card is broken or something...

It would be helpful if you could attach a listing to this bug of the

[Bug 473722] Re: Karmic Frequently Hangs with 100% CPU

2009-11-16 Thread Magnus
I think I have run into this bug with the 185 driver.

I got this problem once or twice since upgrading to Karmic.

When I eventually was able to Ctrl+Alt+F1 and run top I could not see
any specific process hogging the system even though the hogging
continued at that time.

2009-11-07 Thread Jonathan Gossage
Thanks for the info. I guess we will have to wait until Nvidia post an
updated driver and see what happens then.

[Bug 473722] Re: Karmic Frequently Hangs with 100% CPU

2009-11-07 Thread Phil
It seems that nvidia noticed there was a bug in their driver. The
website defaults back to 185.18.36 now, so they must have pulled 190.42
until they get the bug fixed.

[Bug 473722] Re: Karmic Frequently Hangs with 100% CPU

2009-11-04 Thread Jonathan Gossage
Something that would be worth trying on your desktop machine once you
have established that the 185.18.36 driver is stable in your
environment, would be to put the new Nvidia driver on and then disable
Compiz. This would give us an indication of whether the new driver is
likely to be the sole problem or whether we have two separate problems
here, one with (potentially) Compiz on your desktop machine and the
other with the NVidia driver on your MythTV box. I want to see you going
well first but then I want to get to the root cause of these problems so
that good bug reports can be submitted upstream and others can benefit
from our work.

[Bug 473722] Re: Karmic Frequently Hangs with 100% CPU

2009-11-04 Thread Phil
I updated my location in my profile, so hopefully that makes
communication easier. Thanks for pointing that out!

When you mentioned X-Windows, it made me think that maybe Compiz was the
problem. The thing is, I run Compiz on my desktop, but I have
compositing disabled on my MythTV box in order to avoid vsync issues.

However, I do have the newest nVidia driver, 190.42, installed on both
machines, whereas I had 185.18.36 up until several days ago. When I
installed the Ubuntu 9.10 final release, I went to nVidia's site to get
the driver and forgot that they had posted a new version. Either way,
I've downgraded back to 185.18.36 and so far my system has yet to hang
in the last hour or so (on either computer). I'm going to keep testing
it through the rest of the week, but so far it seems like this might
have been due to a change in the nvidia driver.

Also, for what it's worth, I did SSH into my machine and run top from
there. Most of the time compiz.real was hogging the CPU, but a couple
times it was firefox. I didn't get a chance to try the same with my
MythTV box, but considering the implementation of OpenGL in MythTV, I'm
thinking that might have been what was tripping it up there (I don't
have compositing running on that box in order to avoid vsync issues).
Reading the info at nvidia's driver download page
(http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_amd64_190.42.html), it
appears they added support for OpenGL 3.2 in that driver, so maybe
that's what was causing problems?

Don't close the bug quite yet, just in case it still occurs with the
older driver. I'll post again in the next few days to say whether it's
showed up again or not. Thank you for your help.

[Bug 473722] Re: Karmic Frequently Hangs with 100% CPU

2009-11-04 Thread Jonathan Gossage
On the surface, this looks as if it might be a problem somewhere in
X-Windows or the software that sits on top. The first step would be to
capture the last ~200 lines or so of ~/.xsession-errors and post it
here.

The next step is to capture some information about what is happening
during the freeze. The first thing you can try is to do Ctrl-Alt-F1 when
a freeze occurs to bring up a low-level console and run top from there.
If the system won't accept the key combination during the freeze, try
the following. Remember that you can use Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back to your
desktop.

1. Make sure you have an SSH server running on the machine that freezes.
2. Run a SSH session to your freezing machine from your other machine. Use the
low level console to avoid the possibility of it freezing also.
3. Once you are logged into your target machine, wait for a freeze then observe
what top says.
4. Report back with success or failure, then we can see what the next step
needs to be.

BTW it would be helpful if you set your geographic location in your
Launchpad profile so we know roughly what time you are likely to be
available.
