I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. I believe the next kernel update fixed the issue. Please install linux-backport-modules-alsa-karmic-generic and reboot. Re: [Bug 474611] Re: Lost Sound after upgrade to 9.10 did work right after
Appears I don't need too but I'll keep this for reference. Although I may loose everything again after rebooting I went back into Sound Preferences and I had sound themes OFF. I clicked UBUNTU as the sound theme and everything immediately started working I heard a confirmation sound event! I had my optical digital cable plugged in and the sounds system set to that. I am back to digital sound through the optical cable. I went in and turned off sound themes (my preference) and I'm still getting sound when I play .wavs or whatever. This all started when I ran System Administration System Testing. This has happened to me before when I had everything up and running and ran a utility that stepped on a .config or something. I was checking the mute during this whole process and everywhere I saw one it showed NOT muted. I was trying not to be that stupid. The sound mixer seems to have changed in 9.10 and I'm not yet familiar with it. There seems to two main choices for hardware, Internal (I assume MB) and USB (no clue). Same for output. From the Internal choice I have 15 choices between all the analog and digital devices to choose from. The other rather unfortunate thing (for me) is, there are headphone jacks on a pop-up in my case where there are several USB and firewire Sata hook-ups. There is a headphone jack on my keyboard ENERMAX KB007U-B RT and if I'm not mistaken also on my monitor ASUS MK241H add to that a Coax, Optical and six audio plugs on my MB. I've never been able to get them all working. There is a microphone and a webcam built-in on the monitor and I was trying to test. Again there's also a microphone jack on the case pop-up, keyboard and for all I know probably the monitor too. Headphones would be cool and the option to plug them into the keyboard or the case pop-up would be great but as you can tell I'm not smart enough when it comes to all this to get it all working. I did see a HOWTO for my monitor to get the webcab and stuff working. When I feal brave and 9.10 settles down maybe I go back and try it again. I feel blessed and very lucky that after two hours and panicking all I had to do is turn on then off sound themes. By doing so I assume a configuration was updated that got stepped on running the test utility. And now that I have my sound back I'm doing going to touch a thing! Thanks for your quick response!!! I rebooted and I just lost it again. No reason. All the setting appear the same. This time turning on/off sound events themes didn't work. I'll proceed with your original suggestion for the backport. -[d]- -- Lost Sound after upgrade to 9.10 did work right after https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/474611 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 474611] Re: Lost Sound after upgrade to 9.10 did work right after
The backport didn't work. I had sound for awhile then lost it again. Usually after a reboot. I tried again mv ~/.pulse ~/.old-pulse and rebooted. Of course my sound was off, I went in chose my digital device and it started working. I reboot and lost it all. I un-installed the backport and will try re-installing but I'm at a loss. This server is basically my TV, Movie theater... I seriously need sound to work and stay working. Ubuntu has lost it's It just works and I will never be so quick to trust an upgrade again. I'll start searching around... I saw several others who also lost sound. There is a secret series of steps I take and sound starts working. I need to find out what it is so every re-boot I can do rthem over again. If the backport didn't resolve it, and I'll re-install it. Is there any other solutions? I'll re-run the System Testing that should produce another bug report. Are the any commands I can run that would log the error? Something that might help? Thanks everybody, especially Daniel! [Bug 474611] Re: Lost Sound after upgrade to 9.10 did work right after
This is a pulse1.log I do not know where it came from. But when generating a verbose log I discovered it. Sound is completely gone. Several hours ago all I had to do is delete the .pulse or turn on/off sound themes and the sound would come back until reboot. Now none of that is working. ** Attachment added: pulse1.log http://launchpadlibrarian.net/35122260/pulse1.log -- Lost Sound after upgrade to 9.10 did work right after https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/474611 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 474611] Re: Lost Sound after upgrade to 9.10 did work right after
Possible fix? and Issue. Something Daniel said struck me in an earlier post that everything was showing MUTED. In the sound preference GUI nothing was muted so this surprised me but I let it go... Every time I called up the Sound Preference whether from the top right ICON of from the System Preferences Sound, all devices and entries did not show that anything was muted. Searching around someone suggested installing the ALSA-Mixer to see what things looked like from that prospective. I installed the the gnome- alsamixer 0.9.7~cvs.2006091. I found the entry under Applications Sound and Video GNOME ALSA Mixer. When I ran it - under each and every entry for my Realtek ALC1200, all channels from Master, PCM, Front, Fromt-Middle all the way across showed MUTE was ON. I un-muted from this GUI and my sound is back. For what its worth I don't know if after I re-boot if these settings will stick. But it appears the MUTE as shown in the new Sound Preference in no way reflects the MUTEing in the real world. That and upon re-boots and/or other activity the MUTE is being set to ON inadvertently. Because I'll have sound call up Sound Preference and then I'll loose sound again. I'm considering re-booting to see if these setting will stay. Then again, after what I just went through I may consider a movie while my sound is still working. Then later I may consider un-installing the backport I installed earlier. Does anyone know if the alsa-backport I installed earlier can be un-installed with no I'll effects? It didn't solve the issue and if all I need is a different GUI Mixer to turn everything on I don't want this backport if I don't need it. -[d]- -- Lost Sound after upgrade to 9.10 did work right after https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/474611 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 474611] Re: Lost Sound after upgrade to 9.10 did work right after
Yep, on re-boot they all reset to MUTE. Well... Not all like the first time I saw it but enough ere muted including MAIN that I had lost sound again. I un-muted from the ALSA Mixer and I have sound again. The new 9.10 Sound Preference shows no indication of muting. That and I have no idea why my configuration is getting re-muted on boots and/or other activities but that's what's happening. So long as I know that if I reboot or loose sound I can just turn it back on again from another GUI this should suffice until the gods can fix it. If any of you are those gods and need additional system information I will be more than happy to provide it. -[d]- ** Attachment added: MUTE gets set on boot http://launchpadlibrarian.net/35125475/Went_MUTE.png -- Lost Sound after upgrade to 9.10 did work right after https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/474611 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
