[Bug 475010] Re: Hard lockups with new kernels
I guess I've never tried 2.6.32-XX in Karmic but I doubt it would matter. I updated my Karmic to Lucid as soon as the tool-chain was released. The random lockups continued for about 4 to 6 weeks and now they're non- existent. I'm sure it's an Xorg thing and I wish I had the knowledge and the backup hardware to pursue the culprit, but I have neither! -- Hard lockups with new kernels https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/475010 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 475010] Re: Hard lockups with new kernels
I have this same experience with "system lockup." In my case, there are no changes to the screen from whatever desktop was in use. My panel clock shows seconds and the numbers stop changing. I become aware of the lockup when I cannot move the mouse cursor. In addition, I cannot make the "kernel magic keys" work to gather any information, nor can I use the CTRL-ALT-F[1-6] to switch away from X11 to a console. Thank you for your fast response! I have reviewed your posts on that bug and have decided to give your xorg ppa update a try. I added that repo and added those 16 packages you listed...reboot went fine ( everything still works :P ) and I will see how long this box runs without a lockup. I am still searching for a definitive answer and if I find anything I will let you and that bug thread know. Have a good weekend. [Bug 475010] Re: Hard lockups with new kernels
I haven't had a lockup for a month but I'm not sure it's actually fixed or not. I've done two things since the last lockup that might have increased the stability of my system. 1.) A couple of days after my last lockup, I upgraded my hard disk to a larger one. There was nothing wrong with the old one, as far as I know, I just needed more space. I never got any errors on the old disk and I ran smartctl on it a two days ago and got no errors. 2.) [Bug 475010] Re: Hard lockups with new kernels
In my case I'm quite sure it's an Xorg issue for a couple of reasons: (a) I've tried the Karmic kernel in Jaunty and it does NOT cause any Hangs / Freezes / Lockups. (b) Using the Xorg-edgers PPA dramatically reduced the number/frequency of lockups. I know that I "should" try to follow up on this by "purging" the xorg- edgers PPA and then waiting for the very next lockup and filing a bug simply by: Alt + F2 > ubuntu-bug xorg, but (while that's all simple enough) the "follow-up" is simply beyond my skill level and far too time consuming. Read the "X crash, lockup, freeze, exit, or doesn't start/shutdown" section here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting And particularly: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing#Debugging%20Hangs%20/%20Freezes%20/%20Lockups It's also unrealistic for me to pursue that at this time because (a) frequent and random lockups are very hard on hardware and my only backup hardware right now is an old 333MHZ PII, and (b) due to their random, and yet sometimes frequent nature it makes it nearly impossible to complete any other work dependably while troubleshooting the problem. So for me the answer was to simply "give up" on Karmic and depend on Jaunty which has always been stable on my hardware (Hardy is also), and I'm also devoting as much time as possible to testing Lucid which so far doesn't appear to have the "hard lockup" issue for me. I know that's not an ideal situation but it's the only reasonable solution for me at this time. -- Hard lockups with new kernels https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/475010 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

"When you experience these lockups, does your entire screen change to a single color?' No. "Which kernel version are you running on Jaunty that doesn't have these lockups?" I'm currently running Ubuntu Jaunty w/2.6.28-16 with no problems. "I hope we're experiencing the same bug and an expert can chime in to help us." Clearly it's not exactly the same bug, but similar. If you read through that Karmic dev thread I posted you'll see many variations. My point is that we have a huge problem with hard lockups that began sometime around Karmic (testing) and it needs to be solved! Your thread seemed like a good place to start since these hard lockups do not produce an automated bug sequence. I'm over being lazy about it! I'm going to PM folks that replied to my original thread in Karmic testing and see if they have some input. I started with Gutsy and I've never seen Ubuntu so unusable as I have with Karmic and I think the devs do want to know. Just be patient a bit and I'll do everything I can, I'd hope they'd be listening to me because I have been very responsible lately about posting results of updates fixing bugs, or marking bugs invalid if I discover a true fix. -- Hard lockups with new kernels https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/475010 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 475010] Re: Hard lockups with new kernels
I have experienced the same behavior with Ubuntu Karmic beginning as far back as Alpha 6. I'm obviously not alone: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1276146 They are quite random in nature. I've experienced such lockups with web based apps and also simple text projects, whether Gedit or Abiword. They would occur as often as several times right in a row or as seldom as once a week. When they occur absolutely nothing works but powering off with the power button. Alas I was lazy, and since Jaunty had always been stable as a rock I just gave up on Karmic. (I multi-boot). The reason I'm fairly convinced this must be kernel related is that, since Karmic was largely unusable, I upgraded to Lucid (testing) as soon as the Toolchain was uploaded and I'm not experiencing these lockups with the Lucid kernel. Most recently I reinstalled Karmic for grub2 testing purposes and it's still largely unusable because of hard lockups. The first occurred performing the initial post-install updates which created a minor mess in itself. I then experienced another using Firefox. I have very simple hardware: VIA PC2500 mobo, w/C-7D cpu, VIA Unichrome gpu (no 3D), VIA VT8237 audio, w/2GB RAM. I decided I really should try to pursue this and I do have the time to do testing and provide info as needed, although you'll have to be explicit about what's needed, how to get it, how to post it, etc. We do need to fix this Koala killer! ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New => Confirmed -- Hard lockups with new kernels https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/475010 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
