[Bug 47827] Re: vmware-player lintian warnings
This is just a lintian warning, not an error, and I don't see a strong argument for making a big deal out of it. Putting architecture-dependent stuff in /usr/share is a problem for anyone who's really mounting /usr/share across multiple architectures, but putting architecture- independent stuff in /usr/lib does little worse than waste a bit of disk space on such systems, and anyone with setups like that probably has disk space to spare. Adriaan, I would recommend laying off on this one. -- vmware-player lintian warnings https://launchpad.net/bugs/47827 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 47827] Re: vmware-player lintian warnings
The unfortunate reality is that we need to support our product on a lot of different distros, many of which are quite old and don't even follow the FHS well or at all. We're installing everything into /usr/lib/vmware and use that kind of like our own little chroot in some ways. We then set up symlinks for the things that need to be public (icons and such). We don't always know the right paths until we reach vmware-config.pl time, and we have to put files *somewhere* before that. Bottom line is that we probably can't do a thing about this and we certainly won't be rethinking this for a couple of versions. Our constraints are far greater than that of most Linux software, and as such we just can't satisfy the lintian checks for this case. -- vmware-player lintian warnings https://launchpad.net/bugs/47827 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 47827] Re: vmware-player lintian warnings
Please recheck the FHS: "Applications may use a single subdirectory under /usr/lib. If an application uses a subdirectory, all architecture-dependent data exclusively used by the application must be placed within that subdirectory." and: "The /usr/share hierarchy is for all read-only architecture independent data files." The help files for example should also be moved there. ** Changed in: vmware-player (Ubuntu) Status: Rejected => Confirmed -- vmware-player lintian warnings https://launchpad.net/bugs/47827 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 47827] Re: vmware-player lintian warnings
There are a lot of images placed there that the UI uses. We put all the icons that are used for launchers, etc. in the correct places in /usr/share. We keep to ourselves in our folder in /usr/lib so this really isn't a problem. ** Changed in: vmware-player (Ubuntu) Status: Unconfirmed => Rejected -- vmware-player lintian warnings https://launchpad.net/bugs/47827 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
