[Bug 482475] Re: Missing hardware signatures for driver/module rt2870sta

2009-12-22 Thread Reiger
With the latest kernel the device is no longer detected.

uname -ar
Linux bartix 2.6.32-9-generic #13-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 17 17:02:51 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/Linux

Huh?? Were the device ID's removed from the custom kernel??

[Bug 482475] Re: Missing hardware signatures for driver/module rt2870sta

2009-12-06 Thread Reiger
On some further investigation: it looks like:
(a) I must have made a stupid mistake in previous attempts
(b) Some updates had fixed it

Because as I am writing this, I am also connected via my USB-N11 to a
Wirless b/g network with WPA2-PSK; using WICD for graphical network
management/configuration.

Some facts to back up the story ;)

iwconfig:

wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"Ruisvoorn_79abgn"
  Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
  Tx-Power=15 dBm
  Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
  Power Management:off

wlan1 RTxx70 Wireless ESSID:"Ruisvoorn 79" Nickname:"RT3070STA"
  Mode:Managed Frequency=2.442 GHz Access Point: 00:01:E3:D4:03:40
  Bit Rate=18 Mb/s
  RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Link Quality=58/100 Signal level:-78 dBm Noise level:-97 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
  Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

uname -ar:
Linux bartix 2.6.32-6-generic #8experimentalapw1 SMP Mon Nov 30 10:45:03 UTC
2009 i686 GNU/Linux

So it appears this bug is now actually fixed.

[Bug 482475] Re: Missing hardware signatures for driver/module rt2870sta

2009-11-30 Thread Reiger
On further testing; I am unable to successfully associate my USB-N11 to
any network using either the Plasma network thing in Kubuntu 9.10/AMD
64; or WICD in Kubuntu 10.04/x86. Scanning for networks works; but
authenticating with the WPA2-PSK network fails -- with a failure to
obtain an IP address. (If it is of any relevance, WICD is configured to
use wext.)

So to sum up: the patch does what is is supposed to do (make the kernel
recognize the hardware and use the appropriate driver) but it seems the
combination of driver + device + tools does not sum to “just works”...

[Bug 482475] Re: Missing hardware signatures for driver/module rt2870sta

2009-11-30 Thread Reiger
I've just confirmed the experimental kernel for i686 to work with my USB
N11; or at least to recognize it properly:

iwconfig | grep wlan1 -A5 yields (as expected for a working set up on a
laptop with built-in wifi):

wlan1 RTxx70 Wireless ESSID:"" Nickname:""
  Mode:Auto Frequency=2.412 GHz
Link Quality=10/100 Signal level:0 dBm Noise level:-143 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
  Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

I've not yet attempted to configure the device for connection with my
local wireless network; mainly because the experimental kernel does not
boot to an X environment for me (and WPA2-PSK environments are not my
idea of commandline fun); I suspect the fact it enables KMS by default.
I guess the best bet is to try nomodeset to get around this issue for
more thorough testing.

I've applied the ID changes above to the lucid kernel and produced
kernels for testing. If you could test the kernels and report back here
we can look to include this change in lucid. The kernels are at the URL
below:
