[Bug 489041] Re: Acer Aspire 5738 cannot change brightness at all
3esmit thank you so much, your solution worked great. Well, almost My touchpad on/off button is working now, but for some reason my touchpad's scrolling area isn't. I can scroll down, but when I try scrolling up, the active window scrolls down again. such problem didn't exist before trying this work-around. Any idea why this happens? I noticed the same behavior on Windows XP, but it went away after I installed touchpad drivers. Also, the brightness control is working great now, except for that it sometimes changes 'on it's own'. But that's not much of a problem to me, at least for now. -- Acer Aspire 5738 cannot change brightness at all https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/489041 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

There are a couple of things I would like to comment, and a little problem I wish solve (related to this topic) and perhaps any of you could help me: 1) From the changes in the boot options, the ubuntu logo that is shown at the beginning and when shutting down, appears elongated in the with of the screen (just an observation) 2) A curious behaviour of this lovely machine is that sometimes it boots with the brightness quite attenuated. I've tried it several times before and after the last changes, and it happense randomly: sometimes it doesn't get the full bright. THE PROBLEM) The previous step I had taken was to install a 9.04 version on a small disk partition. Now the grub responds to that installation, and so to set the boot options I had to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file of 9.04 installation, since update-grub changes the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file of 9.10 installation. The question is: How could I restore the previous grub, so that it works normally from 9.10? Sorry, I just retested the acpi_backlight=vendor parameter in grub, and with the latest updates its working perfect.. The last time I've tested was in jaunty. This really fixed and works perfect. I've just updated my /etc/default/grub with that option and the changed line its just like this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset i8042.nomux acpi_backlight=vendor" Just to explain: - nomodeset: makes something show up in the screen (fix the videodriver) - i8042.nomux: makes the touchpad button work. - acpi_backlight=vendor: fix the brightness problem. Now just do the update-grub cmd. [Bug 489041] Re: Acer Aspire 5738 cannot change brightness at all
Hello, I have the same notebook model, and this is a problem. Ubuntu idenfies the commands in keyboard to change brightness and it try to change it.. The brightness "tooltip" comes in the right top corner, but it have just a few steps (6 steps), and it does not change a thing. Is intersting that the fadeout that heppens when its going to screensaver happens, and it automatically turn off the monitor too. Adding the parameter acpi_backlight=vendor to the kernel in grub makes the brightness change, but it have too much steps, and it works very buggy (changes automatticaly very crazy, when lighting up it goes all dark, and comes back to where you was... very annoying), so I prefer not using this workaround, since its worst then not having the adjust brightness option. In Fedora 11 the brightness works perfectly in Acer 5738. I didnt tested the Fedora 12 yet. Thank you. -- Acer Aspire 5738 cannot change brightness at all https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/489041 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 489041] Re: Acer Aspire 5738 cannot change brightness at all
Stefan, Here is the dmesg log while booting with the acpi_backlight=vendor option. The only change I notice is that the brightness applet on the panel says it can't get the brightness level. To your question: with this model of Acer notebook brightness control did work douring the brief time between the patched kernel you upload (while I was using Ubuntu 9.04) and the following kernel update. After that I could not go back. Under /sys/class/backlight ther is only a shortcut to a directory named acer-wmi (look at the attached image) I've installed 9.04 again on another disk partition of the same laptop. I attached 2 files: * dmesg-9.04-01.txt (obtained with 9.04 just installed; brightness control doesn't work) * dmesg-9.04-02.txt (after installing the patched kernel; brightness control works fine) I hope it would help 2009/12/14 Stefan Bader > So from that ACPI code it seems that giving you the brightness interface > is rather the bug than it not working. [Bug 489041] Re: Acer Aspire 5738 cannot change brightness at all
So from that ACPI code it seems that giving you the brightness interface is rather the bug than it not working. There are multiple definitions for video devices (this is normal). One of them would probably show up under VGA (or PEGP), the other GFX0 is the one that seems to be present on your system. However the ACPI BIOS only defines functions to control brightness for the other device. Which makes it unlikely that using the functions on the other device has any effect on your real video device. A dumb question in between: did brightness control ever work with Linux? If yes, which version? Somehow my guess would have been that acpi_backlight=vendor should allow the acer-wmi module to have a try on this. But did not work. Still, could you booth with that option and send me the dmesg from that? Also check whether there is something under /sys/class/backlight (thought I would suspect no). -- Acer Aspire 5738 cannot change brightness at all https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/489041 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi Stefan, Sorry for de missing file. I forgot it since your request layed on the other thread of conversation. It's attached now. The command had no effect than to change the "supposed" brightness level to 100%. I had tried it before, and it changes the /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD03 file as well as the Fn keys or the brightness applet in the pannel, but has no real effect ont the screen brightness. Hi Pablo, still missing the acpidump output. Please run the following commands: sudo apt-get install acpidump sudo acpidump -o acpidump.txt Then upload the acpidump.txt file.
