The synaptics.fdi is a hack I found on the web. Reviewing `man 4 synaptics` now, I see some of the datatypes specified in the .fdi are wrong for the named fields. When I correct the types, the X screen comes live. Where is that synaptics patch from? I know it's not from the ubuntu package.. Do you use some unofficial package sources?
