I spoke a little too quickly. The image is correctly oriented in cheesd and XawTV -- but not, I just discovered, in Skype. Same problem on an Asus K60IJ laptop. There are numerous posts about this and many laptops affected by it. Windows had the same problem but it was fixed there by using updated Chacony drivers. There is a fix described in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8925031#post8925031, but that's only a stopgap. Affects me as well, I am using karmic...you can make it almost work by manually compiling the gspca driver, in the end you get the image, but unfortunately it will be flipped and the framerate and image quality will be very poor.
