Luke, i'm very sorry but I've waited a while and never got any response when I opened the bug so I gave up and installed Windows on the PC. Therefore, I can no longer do what you're suggesting. I did try that but after installing drivers and rebooting the graphical environment would not come up so i'd just have a black screen. I also couldn't swtich to the other terminals (Alt+Ctrl+F1, etc.). So the proprietary drivers did not work for me. My best guess why this worked is that the hdmi audio is integrated into this video card. Goto System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers. It was the only driver on the list for me. I was suffering from exactly the same problem. Identical output diagnostics. I have a different model of the hp slimline. s5360f. I had a fresh install of karmic koala.
