Hi Micah, Thanks for the assistance. I created a new profile called test. This profile correctly opened .pdf and .doc files, but still wants to open .mp3 files with movie player despite the fact that in edit-->preferences-->applications mp3 files are meant to be opened with VLC. Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. Sometimes Firefox profiles can become corrupt and/or extensions can conflict. Could you please try this with a new profile and see if the problem still exists? You do not need to delete your old profile to test. If this helps, you might want to try to disable all your extensions and re-enable them one by one until you find the problematic one. Hi Micah, I have tried to manually set the correct appications for firefox to use to open programs by going edit --> preferences --> applications. Mp3s open in movie player. Despite changing the settings to "ask me" it keeps opening them in movie player. I will try to restart the computer to check if this rectifies this problems .doc files open in openoffice, but I had to set this manually. Previously they were not working. PDF files are now also working, but I had to set it manually. Previously they were not working. The work-around for solving the problem seems to be manually setting the applications, but the bugs is still there that firefox doesn't automatically retrieve these settings from gnome. Also, if there are multiple applications for an associated file-type they do not appear in the drop-down list box in the applications setting page. For example, I use Amarok to play MP3s, but the only available application to launch mp3s is movie player.
