[Bug 502801] Re: System completely freezes / crashes on suspend

2010-04-26 Thread Jeremy Foshee
Hi slowtrain,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach
updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 502801

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.
Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 502801] Re: System completely freezes / crashes on suspend

2010-04-26 Thread slowtrain
Hi Jeremy: Thanks for your attention to this problem. While they seem
to be less frequent, my system still freezes maybe once a week (usually
in a cluster of about 3 freezes in a row). When I do get a freeze,
other things in my system get messed up, such as my panel apps and gnome
interface (e.g. separate workspaces in gnome are not so separate anymore
--windows in one workspace show up in others, the list of windows show
them all together). So, while infrequent, these freezes are a headache.

I'll go ahead and run apport. Am not sure how I can test another
kernel. I'm not a software developer, and the suggestions on
KernelMainlineBuilds look like they could wipe out my system if I don't
know what I'm doing. I might try this when I get back to town later
this summer.

Cheers!

Some new behavior that may be related to the bug. I just woke up from
suspend and my system could not see any wifi networks, even though there
are a dozen in the area. I found the following error messages in
kern.log. I was able to restart wifi access by using modprobe to remove
the rt61pci module and then reinsert it.

[Bug 502801] Re: System completely freezes / crashes on suspend

2010-01-05 Thread slowtrain
Some additional dmesg error messages on a near crash:

My system started doing what it does on a crash when I tried to
hibernate it last nite--screen goes blank, a lot of time without hard
disk access. I frantically hit some alt-sysreq keys to see if I could
shutdown more gracefully. The system turned off. This morning, when I
turned it back on again, it woke up as if from hibernation, to my
surprise. The wake up took unusually long and the screen was blank,
except the following error messages popped up. I fished them out of
dmesg. Hope this helps.
