Tried to find the other file, but instead was told it's not there:

I was going to state that I did not know how to "run without any..." but
it appears to these novice eyes (mine) that that's what my system is
already doing, hence you already have that Xorg.0.log in the first
instance. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the suggestion Bartosz. If I understood you correctly,
since I do not have any /etc/X11/xorg.conf file I can use gedit to
create a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file that contains one line and only one
line: "HorizSync 30.0-100.0" (without the " marks)

I will try that next and then will reboot and see if that works.

2010-01-07 Thread harelb
Bartosz,
I rebooted after creating the one-line /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. It did not
quite work. I got this error in a dialog box:

"Ubuntu is runnign in low-graphics mode
The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration
to solve this.

(EE) Problem parsing the config file
(EE) Error parsing the config fie"

My xorg.conf file contained, again, just the one line "HorizSync
30.0-100.0" as you suggested. I will now delete the file (returning
things to the way they used to be since I used to have no such file at
all) and will wait until there is a definite (or very likely) working
solution before making any other changes so that I don't accidentally
make things worse by experimenting. Thanks in advance for any such
further suggestions.

2010-01-08 Thread Nelsson
Attached my xorg.conf, which worked for my resolution problems. It's
quite basic and the HorizSync-line is set on a correct place. I'm not
sure about the correct vRefresh-rate though (not sure about the
HorizSync-rate either, as I understood, monitors have differences...) so
you might want to remove that line.

For you knowledge, if you will not set HorizSync and vRefresh in
xorg.conf, and the system doesn't recognize the correct values for your
monitor, the system uses default rates. I think HorizSync's default is
very limited, something like.. what was it.. 35.0-36.0?

2010-01-08 Thread harelb
Thank you Nelsson! I am however concerned that if I 'experiment'
something might make the resolution worse or impossible..is there an
expert out there (Nelsson or someone else who is expert in this area)?

Should I just 1) take Nelsson's xorg.conf
2) delete the vRefresh-rate line then save and exit?

or instead should I keep his file as is and it's 99% certain it won't make my
monitor unusable?
(The above is my main question..as secondary question: any clues why Dapper
Drake worked perfectly with my monitor (or detecting it) while Hardy and now
Koala don't? shouldn't this be a bug fixed for next version of Koala since
Drake was able to understand my monitor?) Thanks

Since I'm not a technie I didn't try to read that xorg.0.log but did you

Also, is there any chance the next version of Ubuntu will incorporate
this so people with insignia or similar monitors, who had no problems

[Bug 503674] Re: [K8M800]Screen resolution used to be ok in Ubuntu 6, not in 8.04 and later

2010-01-14 Thread Tobias Wolf
Hello Harel,

perhaps you can update the driver using the third-party Xorg »edgers«
driver repository. It’s a so-called PPA (personal package archive). I
guess the Openchrome driver in there does not depend on a more recent
Xorg, so install without dependency error. I can’t check. But you’ll see
if it installs.

To add the additional »Software Source« for »Xorg Edgers / drivers only« use
this command:

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/drivers-only

And then run a package update in the command line:

  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-openchrome

Before you enter »Yes« you should look at what it proposes to install.
You want to pull in the newer OpenChrome driver. It should only install
that one package and maybe some necessary dependency.

Afterwards you can disable this PPA source in the »Software Sources«
dialog.

Then reboot without an xorg.conf at /etc/X11/cong.conf. This is to test if it
magically recognizes your monitor again.
If that didn’t work then the newer driver didn’t help and you should use the
manual config using Nelsson’s xorg.conf.

Perhaps the option that Bartosz mentioned helps. I don’t know this
driver and its options.

[Bug 503674] Re: [K8M800]Screen resolution used to be ok in Ubuntu 6, not in 8.04 and later

2010-01-14 Thread harelb
Thank you everyone including Tobias, Nelsson, and Bartosz!

!Before getting to Tobias' message I tried two experiments and
apparently the second one worked! Remember I am completely unfamiliar
with xconf and chrome etc, so I merely experimented blindly. Here is
what I did:

The experiment was only "half" blind since I had, first, Nelsson's post
#13 with his xorg.conf and second, I had the warning from him that
vertRefresh might not work. However I thirdly knew that I had an error
message (as poreted in my message #11 above) when I tried to use
"HorizSync 30.0-100.0" per Bartosz's earlier suggestion, and I saw that
Nelsson's xorg.conf had that line..so I decided to try four experiments:

1) Try Nelsson's file with both the HorizSync line and the VertRefresh
lines both BOTH commented out (I used google to learn that # works here
as it does in some other areas)

(begin)

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "openchrome"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
# HorizSync 30.0-100.0
# VertRefresh 50-60
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

(end)

2) Try Nelsson's file with only VertRefresh line commented out, but with
HorizSync left in

(begin paste)

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "openchrome"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
HorizSync 30.0-100.0
# VertRefresh 50-60
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

(end paste)

I was worried about this because I had the earlier error (see post #11)
when I left the HorizSync still there..but this seemed to work, so I did
not try the other two experiements, which would have been

3) Leave in VertRefresh but comment-out the HorizSync and
4) leave in both.

Details of what happened when I used 2) and then Restarted my computer:

I did see something that (unless I was not paying enough attention in
the past) was new, during the computer's lines of self-talk" while
rebooting, and it was something like:

"Filesystem check in progress" (and something about his ESC to stop) and
some line with

/(/dev/[other words here...]

I am pretty sure it was like that a / then a ( and then / and then dev/

Then I got a very very very small display so I knew something changed..I
was able to log in and used

System-->preferences--->Display

and found out it was set to 1680 by 1200

My monitor's official limit is 1024 by 768 (which is still much better than the
800x600 I have been stuck with)
and fortunately that WAS available in the pulldown menu (unlike before this
(fix?)) so I chose that and said YES when it asked me whether to "keep this
confirguration"

Then I re-started the computer again and looks like I am at 1024x768
still...good!

Given that I am a newbie, and given that my time is limited (with my
fulltime work duties now starting again in a week) and given that it
took so many hours before (see 6 pages at
http://www.uluga.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1361193&page=6 ) I am
tempted to just STAY WITH THIS and not try to change anything else
unless there is a reason why there is a problem with what I have now?
What do you experienced folks think?

And my second question: Should I worry about that "filesystem check in
progress" self-talk by my computer that first time I rebooted after
changing the xorg.conf file? That's my last "pragmatic" question for now
:-)

My third and last question for now is: will this thread on launchpad
automatically alert the people behind the next version of Ubuntu to try
to make this automatic so no one will be in my shoes again? (reminder--
Dapper Drake understood my monitor perfectly and had no problems showing
the right 1024x768 display...but Heron and Koala both kept me in 800x600
as my higher allowed option, until this, I hope, final fix)

[Bug 503674] Re: [K8M800]Screen resolution used to be ok in Ubuntu 6, not in 8.04 and later

2010-02-05 Thread harelb
On January 20th I read the post by Bartosz,"Please apply this patch and
attach your Xorg.0.log file after that."

Naturally, being someone with minimal technical expertise with linux,
and naturally being concerned that now my computer finally works, not
wanting to implement something on my computer until I at least
understood (at least partially) what it was, I sent a private email to
Bartosz (below, also sent on January 20th) but did not receive a reply
to the email. Instead now 2 weeks later Bartosz updates this as "low"
importance. For my computer it is "low" since my problem is solve..for
other? Not a minor problem, this bug in upgrading from Dapper to the
latest edition. It is strange that some admins on this site seem to
think the novice users should just run anything on their computer
without knowing what it does, after things are finally working..

Hello Bartosz,
I appreciate your getting back to me but am somewhat confused by your
response. Could you clarify my question below.

1. Why should I apply a patch when my computer is finally working?

2. Are you associated with Ubuntu in any formal capacity? I am also
worried about ruining my monitor if something goes wrong with the
patch, given that my teaching duties resume in 5 days. I would hate to
have something go wrong now that things are finally, finally working
again after 6 pages of help on ubuntuforums and 20+ messages on
launchpad. Is there an assurance you can give? Can a patch be "undone"
any time, even if my monitor isn't working because of it?

3. I also don't know what it means to "apply a patch" even if 1 and 2
are answered. I would need precise directions about what to do with
this text file "dcc2.patch" -- assuming I have answers also for 1 and
2.

4. I don't believe you have replied to this earlier question:
"is there any chance the next version of Ubuntu will incorporate
this so people with insignia or similar monitors, who had no problems
with Drake but had problems with Heron and Koala, will have things work
automatically (with default settings) in the next version? "

Thanks in advance for clarifying these in a way a relative novice like
myself, can understand.

Harel

[Bug 503674] Re: [K8M800]Screen resolution used to be ok in Ubuntu 6, not in 8.04 and later

2010-01-09 Thread harelb
Hi Bartosz, I tried to install as you suggested and got this error:

" Package: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome

Status: Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: xserver-xorg-core (>=
2:1.6.99.900)"

I hesitate to try to use a debugger unless there is one for complete
NEWBIES. I am a very very basic user of linux..I had never, ever even
heard of xorg etc before this error. The debugger is probably not for
them then..do you agree? (of course if you tell me exactly what to do,
line by line, step by step, then I can copy/paste whatever
answers/errors I get, and post them here..but that might be too
complicated?)

So is there something a newbie can do who is not techie and not able to
really use debuggers? And in the future, if you have another suggestion,
if there is another new suggestion of lines to "add to the xorg.conf"
file, could you please let me know what to add it to..right now I have a
blank file, and I'm not sure if adding one to a blank file is what is
intended or not..?
