[Bug 506396] Re: locale is not set

2010-07-03 Thread Philippe
I would like to add that this issue may not be closed yet. I have just
upgraded to version 10.04 I have a locale issue. If I log in as a user
running the command "locale" the following results are obtained. (This
is also the same if I run sudo locale).

LANG=en_CA.ISO-8859-1
LC_CTYPE="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_NUMERIC="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_TIME="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_COLLATE="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_MONETARY="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_MESSAGES="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_PAPER="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_NAME="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_ADDRESS="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_ALL=

if I log in as root, I get
LANG=C
LC_CTYPE="C"
LC_NUMERIC="C"
LC_TIME="C"
LC_COLLATE="C"
LC_MONETARY="C"
LC_MESSAGES="C"
LC_PAPER="C"
LC_NAME="C"
LC_ADDRESS="C"
LC_TELEPHONE="C"
LC_MEASUREMENT="C"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="C"
LC_ALL=

/var/lib/locales/supported.d/en contains the following
en_CA.ISO-8859-1 ISO-8859-1
en_HK.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_DK.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_IN UTF-8
en_ZW.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_NZ.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_PH.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_NG UTF-8
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_GB.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_AU.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_SG.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_BW.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_AG UTF-8
en_ZA.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_CA.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_IE.UTF-8 UTF-8

 /etc/default/locale contains
LANG="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"

/var/lib/locales/supported.d/local contains:
en_CA.ISO-8859-1 ISO-8859-1
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8

Why is the root user not acquireing the same language settings as the
general user? How can I fix that?

Thank you

[Bug 506396] Re: locale is not set

2010-01-29 Thread Peter Clifton
Mine is fine:

[Desktop]
Session=default
Language=en_GB.utf8
Layout=gb

I've not had the problem since I reset the setting in gdm, so perhaps it
was just a transient upgrade issue.

We probably ought to close this if it isn't showing up on upgrades.

2010-01-29 Thread Martin Pitt
ah, thanks for clarifying. Do you have a boken "Language=" setting in
~/.dmrc ? You can pick your language in the gdm greeter, perhaps this
was set to an invalid value instead of "English (Australia)"?

** Package changed: langpack-locales (Ubuntu) => gdm (Ubuntu)

Yes

LANG="en_AU.UTF-8"

No, I see the correct output using the console, I get the problem when running X

Anyway, I have reinstalled from Alpha 2 and now don't have the problem.
The previous system I was using that had the problem was an upgrade from
Karmic.

Thanks, Mike

[Bug 506396] Re: locale is not set

2010-01-20 Thread Peter Clifton
Hi Martin,

It is possible that the bug I encountered was not the same as the OP, so
I'm sorry for re-assigning to GDM if that is not the case.

In my case, however.. the system locale (as used by the TTY consoles)
was correct, and it was GDM which reset the locale back to "C".

Perhaps Mike can confirm whether he also sees "C" locale on the console.
(Assuming that his report was based upon testing from within X).
