As requested, here is a video I took of the encounter.  Please note that
this is a new HDD, no previous OS on it, so this is a fresh install of
Karmic, not an upgrade.

The audio coming from the video sounds like pops and crackles.  This is
from XvidCap and is not a part of the problem, so you can ignore the
sound from the posted video.  It's the behaviour of the volume controls
that I am attempting to illustrate.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu 
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.  Would you 
please add the information requested from the Reporting Sound Bugs section of 
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems by running the command 
apport-collect -p alsa-base 518671. 
If you are running Karmic, please read through the following wiki page as it 
resolves a lot of common audio problems.

Can you please link to the XvidCap screencast you referred to as this
may be helpful.

Also this is not a yelp issue, so I have changed back to the default Ubuntu 
package for now.
