@dns_server: You still see this problem with the 2.6.32-16 kernel? Would it be possible for you to boot your system, ssh in from another computer and run “apport-collect 525354”? I am also having this same problem, upon starting X the screen goes black. Just adding a comment to say that this happens to myself also, except I'm running ATI hardware and the open source radeon driver... but exactly the same symptoms. Can you try one of the post-alpha 3 live dailies? Ok. I've tried with my laptop too, which sports and nVidia quadro 140M. Results are almost the same, just the "hang-on" time is a little bit smaller. In the xorg log, as with the other nvidia card, I can read the error: (EE) NOUVEAU(0): Error creating GPU channel: -19 (EE) NOUVEAU(0): Error initialising acceleration. Yes!!! I left ubuntu's live cd inside the computer and, after a long while, it stepped out from hangin' on. After spending a lot of thoughts, X decided to switch to fbdevhw drivers. Now I can send you all the log from this experience. In xorg.0.log there are also some clue that nouveau support nvidia cards up to geforce 8: does it means that all subsequent 9800 (like mine) and gtx 200 are not served? If true, this is quite bad, since it means that we are talking about all the last 4-5 years graphics card. Surely is discouraging for the average user from installing ubuntu on his computer. Maybe I just misunderstood the xorg.log, or at leat I hope to. I have also a laptop with an nvidia quadro: tomorrow I'll put it under test too. I get blank screen booting lucid alpha3 live. My graphic card is a 9800GTX+. I can assume is something connected to nouvea because last thing I see on the screen (booting without "quiet splash") are some log lines referred to nouveau. Then everything goes black and the system hangs on. I can't get the control of machine, so I can't post any error. I could file my system specs got with dmidecode on ubuntu 9.10, instead. Let me now how can I help. Let's focus this bug report on the blank screen issue. Sounds like just a vt mapping bug. For the crash, please file a separate bug report. Probably easiest thing would be to update to latest lucid, reproduce the crash, and let apport capture the trace.
