[Bug 525498] Re: hardware #94: ext3, and ext4 shoudn't it be ext3 and ext4?
The serial comma is absolutely required, especially in technical writing, as it is the only means of providing clarity in otherwise ambiguous situations. While this particular sentence would still be understandable without it, consistency is key in documentation. In short, the original is correct. -- hardware #94: ext3, and ext4 shoudn't it be ext3 and ext4? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/525498 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 525498] Re: hardware #94: ext3, and ext4 shoudn't it be ext3 and ext4?
What you're referring to is known as the serial comma. From Wikipedia: In American English it is standard in most non-journalistic writing, which typically follows the Chicago Manual of Style. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_comma As an American, technical writer, and an avid supporter of the serial comma; I'd say that its use is justified. The Ubuntu documentation follows the GNOME Documentation Style Guide, which uses the Chicago Manual of Style for grammar and punctuation. Chicago recommends the serial comma.
