Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-5-amd64-xeon

EVERYTHING WORKS FINE WITH THE DAPPER 2.6.15 KERNEL IN EDGY.

Gnome freezes after 1-2 minutes with the 2.6.17 kernel (now
2.6.17-5-amd64-xeon).

System freezes when logging out of gnome.

Kernel panic with ctrl-alt-del when gnome is frozen.

This happens with the "nv" and the "nvidia" drivers.

I suppose this is due to a bug in the kernel via-agp driver, because I
had this same problem in the standard DAPPER system after installing the
edgy 2.6.17 kernel and also when booting from a self compiled 2.6.17
vanilla kernel in dapper.

After having followed the 2.6.17 development cycle and trying 2.6.17-rc-
mm (and -rc) kernels before and after this new via-agp driver was
introduced, I am now almost convinced that this is due to the new via-
agp driver introduced in the 2.6.17 kernel. The system was stable when I
removed agp support in my self-compiled 2.6.17 kernel.

My motherboard is an Asrock 775dual-880pro (via 880pro chipset). The
via-agp kernel driver recognizes it as a via 880ULTRA agp (but not
880PRO ?)

AGP does not work with the 2.6.15 kernel (as there is no support for my agp
chipset); I get 5000 fps in glxgears.
AGP works with the 2.6.17 kernel; I get 12000+ fps in glxgears, but the system
freezes after 1-2 minutes (and kernel panics).

I am now running edgy with the dapper 2.6.15 kernel. Everything works
fine (except that agp is disabled).

This is a CRITICAL bug. Please fix, or ask the kernel agp driver
developer to fix this bug.
